Ella Wheeler Wilcox (1850 - 1919) in her poem "Solitude", quite rightly said -

Laugh, and the world laughs with you:
Weep, and you weep alone;
For the sad old earth
Must borrow its mirth,
It has trouble enough of its own...............

Slippin' on the Lino is a compilation of family humour columns that Jane wrote for Queensland’s main newspaper, The Courier-Mail, in the 90s. A thoroughly enjoyable read for people of all ages and stages Slippin' on the Lino tells everyday tales of living to which we all relate.

Jane Grieve writes about Sam, Louisa and Jock. Close your eyes, change the names, and they will fit your current or past experiences. The Grieve domestic escapades took place in Australia; are household concerns similar the world over? It makes an interesting comparison. Slippin' on the Lino tells it as it is in Australia.

In Slippin' on the Lino, Jane spills the beans on the truth behind the closed doors of parenting; doors which, for her, emitted all kinds of noises including laughter, crying, roars of frustration, squeals of delight and actually, quite an alarming variety of animal noises if truth be told; which it is, in Slippin’ on the Lino.

Slippin' on the Lino contains 44 short, funny stories, in paperback.  White it's a light read in every sense of the word (you can comfortably hold it up in bed, or hide it under the desk at work) nonetheless it is beautifully laid out, carefully edited and subtly illustrated. And well written, actually.

Testimonials and Reviews

Janie - Lou just arrived up at Buderim and she tells me that (daughter) Suzie has to yell at her to shut the door as she is laughing so much reading your book.               Tim

By the way...I finished Slippin on the Lino last night and loved it! Absolutely hilarious...The third last chapter too (what's the title of it again?) about being a woman who everyone hangs off and relies on (i.e. being a mother and wife) - the one where you get ready to go out to your art show and get dressed up after a hot shower and then one of your kids floods the bath and the hot water system was SO POIGNANT for me last night. Man, it hit the spot!                        Emma (young mother)

Your book is sensational and I know it is just the start of bigger and better things! - fond love        Wendy

Dear Jane - We just wanted to say how excited we are for you with the publishing of your first book! We really enjoy your writing style so we are really looking foward to getting our own copy of Slippin' on the Lino and having a good read. We loved the Recycling at Kindy story - brought back some great memories..... sincerely Bevan and Judy

"Book is hilarious Darl ..... you write rubbish SOOOOO well!" Anne Ballinger

Janie - Congratulations - I am in awe of your superb writing skills… and I am a very hard critic. I made a rule recently that only books that deserve to be kept can linger on my bookshelves and “Slippin on the Lino” will certainly remain. You always were a great wordsmith but now have proved it…well done and how courageous to put it all out there. Loved the pets, the fairies, the toothbrushes and slipp’n on the lino … I look forward to the next book of short stories!

Congratulations! And Wow! I've just acquired a copy and am just blown away by 'Slippin' on the Lino' and by the fact that I once knew its author in some small way. Haven't finished reading yet, but already some of your tales have sent me back through my boxes of notes and drafts to stories I have written about our days at 'Yarrabin' (including one about my predatory kissing attacks on Tommy Milne). References to your sisters have brought back some wonderful childhood memories.   Meanwhile, keep slippin', because that's just about describes what we all do on this lino of life.                                    Helen (1 Feb 2010)

Your book is a sheer delight Janie, leaping fresh off the pages as if  you are telling it all for the first time, thank you. Ernest was delighted to have a copy.  If you ever do a book launch/promotion in or near Canberra try and go via here - Hugs, Georgina Persse
